Final Regular Season Highlights and Playoff Predictions

I was hoping for a Historic night in Gordon County Friday night for a chance of all three high schools making the state playoffs, but the stars were not aligned that evening and Calhoun will be the only team headed to the state playoffs representing Gordon County  Calhoun punched its ticket Friday night at the Reeve and won the record breaking 18th straight region title by defeating LFO 49-0.  The offense fired on all cylinders and the defense was lights out all game. Zack Fuller scored two rushing touchdowns and Gavin Gray tossed 3 td passes on the night.  After the game their was a celebration at midfield in which Hal Lamb's father, legendary GA High School football coach Ray Lamb presented Coach Hal Lamb with a plaque honoring the historic 18th straight region title.  There was a fireworks display and a photo montage of all the previous region winning teams for Calhoun on the video board.  Calhoun is now guaranteed at least two home playoff games as they will host Fannin County this Friday night in the first round of AAA state playoffs.

Gordon Central had a chance to be a number 4 spot in the AA playoffs but could not get past the Coosa Eagles this Friday night at Ratner.  The game was very close in the first half with Coosa hanging to a 10-7 Halftime lead.  GC was missing one of their main play makers with Senior Seth Wolfe sitting on the bench and later Nelson Gravitt would be injured in the first half with a collarbone injury.   In the 2nd half, the Warriors defense did not have a solution to stop Coosa's speedster, Kenan Dixon.  He accounted for 3 td's on the night for Coosa.  Coosa would go on to cruise to a 37-14  win over GC.  An emotional Coach Nix said after the game that GC fought hard all year and he was very proud of their effort.  The sky is the limit for the future of Gordon Central in the upcoming years.

The Sonoraville Phoenix hosted the North Murray Mountaineers at the Furnace Friday night for Senior Night and they were hoping for a win and some help to get back in the playoffs.  It was a defensive stalemate for most of the first half between both teams until North Murray got on the scoreboard first with a Preston Poag td pass to Landon Burrell.  North Murray would add a field goal before halftime making the score 10-0.  The Phoenix offense could never really get anything going and they were held in check all night by the Mountaineers stingy defense.  North Murray would clinch the victory, 23-0 and grab the last playoff spot in 6AAA.  Coach Pate was proud of his team and knows the foundation is set for this team to improve for the next season.

SOME PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS:

The Playoffs begin Friday evening and several teams in NWGA are going for state titles!  Rome is going for the 3peat and Calhoun is looking for back to back titles for the first time in school history!  The Rockmart Yellow Jackets have a strong case to be champions of AA.  Cartersville looks to win another state title for AAAA.  Looking at the playoff brackets so far, I think Calhoun has a pretty easy path to Mercedes Benz in December.  A possible semifinal match up with Peach County looms ahead in late November for the Jackets.  Peach will be looking for revenge after losing to Calhoun in the controversial state title game last year.

Rockmart will be tested in the 2nd round of the AA state playoffs if they get by their first round opponent, South Atlanta.  Either Bremen or Union County could give the Yellow Jackets a scare.  If Rockmart can survive through the second round, I blieve they will have a clear path to the title game.  Rome is looking for its 3rd straight state title, and with Knox kadum at quarterback and Jamious Griffin running the ball, that should be the one-two combination to bring another state title to Rome.  Cartersville looks to make a run in the AAAA state playoffs and has a strong enough team to make it to Atlanta.  The Chattooga Indians hosts their first home playoff game since 2000 as they will play Washington.  Treylon Shepperd and the Haraslon County Rebels travel to play Dawson County in an intrigiung match up in the first round of the AAA playoffs.  Ringgold will be at Peach County, LFO hosts North Hall, North Murray travels to play GAC, Coosa will be at defending AA state champs Hapeville Charter and Pepperell will be on the road at Douglas of ATL.
