Winding Down the Season..

It is the last week of the regular season of High School Football in NWGA.  Can you believe it? Seems like this season has just flown by!  And you could not script it any better than for the last games for our Gordon County Schools.  First let us recap this past Friday's games.  Calhoun hosted the surprising Haralson County Rebels and their star running back Treylon Sheppard at the Reeve in a showdown of region heavyweights.  The Calhoun defense did what no other team could do all season against Sheppard, they kept him check the whole game!  He had only 104 yards rushing on 34 carrries.   The Jackets defense loaded the box all evening and didn't even user their corners!  The Calhoun offense went to the air most of the game with Gavin Gray having a great night with 160 passing yards.  The Jackets rolled to a 41-6 win over the Rebels.

The Sonoravile defense was a big part of the Phoenix 19-8 win over Coahulla Creek Friday night for Homecoming at the Firepit.  Blade Bryant scored a touchdown and the Phoenix smothering defense kept the Colts in check most of the night.  It was a huge region win for Sonoraville and keeps their playoff hopes alive!

Gordon Central played one of the best teams in the sate of Georgia Friday night against the Rockmart Yellow Jackets, and for one quarter they gave all the Yellow Jackets could handle!  The yellow Jackets scored 2 quick td's from ZJ Whatley and a Dylan Bailey touchdown pass to Chandler Cooper.  GC responded with a FG from Edgar Ramirez and a fumble recovery for a touchdown from Isaac Dye to cut the lead to 14-11.  That would be as close as the Warriors would get as the Yellow Jackets would go on a scoring tear with more touchdowns from Whatley, Cooper, and Ant Lester to put away the Warriors 65-11.  Rockmart claimed back to back region titles for the first time since the 1940's.

Friday night sets up playoff scenarios for all three Gordon County schools!  Calhoun goes for History Friday night as they host the LFO Warriors for Homecoming and the possibility of clinching their record breaking 18th straight region title!  The winner of this game wins the region and will host at least two home playoff games in the AAA state tournament.  LFO comes in at 7-2 on the season and are red hot after a big time region win over North Murray Friday night!  Expect a packed house Friday at the Reeve to see possibly a record breaking night!

The Phoenix are very much alive in the playoff hunt!  They host a tough North Murray Mountaineer team at the Pit Friday night.  If Sonoraville wins and Ringgold loses, the Phoenix would grab the last playoff spot in Region6AAA!  If Sonoraville and Ringgold win, there would be a mini playoff between Sonoraville, Ringgold, and North Murray for the last playoff spot.

The last playoff spot in Region 7AA comes down to Gordon Central hosting the Coosa Eagles at Ratner Friday night.  Gordon Central has had quite an interesting season with great region wins and heartbreaking losses.  It all comes down to Friday night for the Warriors to get into the playoffs for the first time since 2012.

I predict that Calhoun will handle business Friday night at the Reeve and not disappoint the Homecoming crowd.  Calhoun will win 45-7 and clinch their 18th straight region title and break the state record  for most consecutive region titles.  The yellow Jackets have an excellent chance to repeat as state champs as well.  I think the Phoenix season comes to an end Friday at the pit against North Murray.  I think it will be a low scoring affair for a little bit then North Murray will pull away in the end with quarterback Preston Poag Jr. North Murray wins in a close one.

Gordon Central versus Coosa will be a hard fought contest for both teams fighting for a playoff spot.  GC needs to be prepared to stop the Eagles main weapon, Keenan Dixon.  If the Warriors defense can keep him contained, I think the Warriors can pull off the victory.  Regardless, this game will come down to the 4th quarter.  Be prepared for a nail biter at Ratner Friday night!

High School Football Highlights from NWGA

We are counting down to the final weeks of the regular seaon in High School Football!  Some teams clinched playoff spots Friday night while others saw their chances dimmer.  Calhoun imposed their will on Coahulla Creek Friday night in Varnell and won going away 56-13.  Both Gavin Gray and Zack Fuller had great performances on the night for the Yellow Jackets.  The Jackets improved to 8-0 on the season and clinched a playoff spot. Calhoun has a chance at History Friday night as they host the surprising Haralson Rebels (7-1) for Senior Night.  If Calhoun wins and LFO loses to North Murray Friday night, Calhoun will clinch its historic 18th straight region title.  Gordon Central kept its post season chances alive with a big win over Model 36-26.  It was GC's 2nd straight region win.  Touchdowns on the night from Nelson Gravitt, Jordan Jacques, and Alec Morris helped the Warriors push ahead in the 2nd half.  This sets up a match up for the #4 seed in the playoffs from Region 7AA in two weeks against Coosa at Ratner.  The Warriors have a monumental task this Friday as they will travel to play one of the best teams in the state of Georgia in AA football right now, the Rockmart Yellow Jackets.

Sonoraville's playoff hopes pretty much vanished Friday night as they were defeated by LFO on the road 33-14.  The Phoenix could not stop the rushing attack from the Warriors and got behind early and was not able to recover.  Also Coach Denver Pate was not able to coach the team after an altercation in the previous weeks game against Adairsville with an official.  The loss drop the Phoenix to 3-5 on the season pretty much ending any chance of postseason.  Sonoraville heads back for Homecoming as they host Coahulla Creek Friday night.

Other highlights in the area include Haralson beating Ringgold 30-14 with another 300 yard rushing performance from Treylon Shepperd as he inches closer to the state record.  Rome clinched another region title in 7AAAAA by defeating Hiram 56-0.  Pickens High School won its first ever region title Friday night in 6AAAA by defeating Ridgeland 31-21.  More Great High School Football in store for this area Friday Night in NWGA!

Highlights From Last Week In High School Football Across NWGA

The High School Football regular season is starting to wind down in our area and the final push for the playoffs will be happening for several teams.  It was a light schedule of football as Region 7AA enjoyed Friday off.  Calhoun had their starters already on the bench before halftime as they made quick work of the lowly Murray County Indians beating them 56-0.  Zack Fuller, Gavin Gray, and the Calhoun offense fired on all cylinders and put the game away quick.  It was the first home game at the Reeve in over a month!  Calhoun travels to play  Coahulla Creek Friday night in another 6AAA region match up.  Sonoraville and Adairsville tangled up in region match up this past Friday night and the Phoenix held off Adairsville to win 14-10.  The Phoenix jumped out to an early 14-0 lead with touchdowns from  Blade Bryant and Colton Richards.  The Phoenix defense stopped the Tigers comeback in the 2nd half and sealed the victory.  Sonoraville keeps its playoff chances alive and has a tough road game against LFO Friday night.  The game of the night in the region may have been Haralson County against North Murray.  Both teams were fighting for a top spot in the region and Haralson was able to get a road victory 24-22 over the Mountaineers.  Treylon Shepperd kept his record setting pace for rush yards as he ran for a career high 412 yards on the night.  He his on pace to have the Georgia state record for rushing yards by end of the season.  The Rebels improve to 6-1 on the season, their best record since 2007

Rome and Cartersville both won Friday night as well.  Rome had no problem with East Paulding, but Cartersvillle struggled with Sandy Creek only winning 7-0.  Rome travels to play Hiram Friday night and Cartersville will be at Chapel Hill for a region matchup.  LaFayette's playoff dreams were crushed by Ridgeland Friday night with a 69-7 drubbing.  Darlington secured a big time win over Trion and Christian Heritage stopped their losing skid by defeating Bowdon,

This Friday night, Region 7AA sets up some important matchups in the region.  Gordon Central hosts Model in a major region game that both teams need to win to have a shot at the post season.  Rockmart travels to play Coosa as the Eagles have won 2 straight region games.  Dade County will be in Lindale at Pepperell Friday night while Armuchee will travel to play the Chattooga Indians.  All games scheduled for 7:30 pm kickoffs.  Go out and support local athletics!

This Past Week In High School Football Across NWGA

We are getting down to the last few weeks in High School Football and the Playoff Push is starting to happen for some teams.  All three Gordon County schools were on the road Friday night and they went 2-1 with combined records.  Calhoun was too much for Adairsville as they won in dominating fashion 61-0 over the Tigers.  The Jackets forced 6 turnovers on the night for Adairsville and scored at will!  Gavin Gray and Zack Fuller had great stats for the Jackets and the starters were pulled by halftime.  The 2nd and 3rd stringers got some playing time and contributed as well.  The Jackets improved to 6-0 on the season and finally head back home Friday as they will host the winless Murray County Indians at the Reeve.

The Gordon Central Warriors won their first region game of the year as they defeated the Armuchee Indians 36-7 this past Friday night at Armuchee.  The GC Offense opened it up with different formations and Nelson Gravitt split time at QB with Clayton Hogue.  Gravitt threw for 2 touchdown passes and ran in for two as well.  The Warriors defense shut down prolific passer Brayden Perry and was in his face all night long.  The Warriors improve their record to 2-5 and if they win 2 of the next three games, they may sneak into the playoffs!

The Sonarville Phoenix played their best game of the season in a heartbreaking loss on the road Friday night in Haralson County.  The Phoenix knew what was coming against the leading rusher in the state of Georgia, Treylon Sheppard.  Sheppard piled up the yards against the Phoenix with 43 carries and 301 yards total on the evening.  The Phoenix Offense was able to  move the ball throughout the game and both teams ended regulation with a 20-20 tie.  Tripp Morrison kicked a FG for the Phoenix on their first possession in OT to take a 23-20 lead. Treylon Shepperd scored the game winning TD for the Rebels on their next possession improving their record to 5-1 on the season.  The Phoenix drop to 2-4 and go back home to host Adairsville Friday night.  Haralson County will battle the North Murray Mountaineers in Chatsworth Friday night in a battle for the 2nd spot in Region 6AAA.

Other highlights in NWGA football include Rockmart dominating Pepperell in Lindale Friday night, Coosa getting their 2nd region win over Dade County, and Chattooga defeating Model.  All Region 7AA teams are off Friday because of Fall Break.  The push for the playoffs resumes next Friday.

Last Weeks High School Football Highlights Across NWGA

We are halfway through the High School Football season and this is the time of year when teams make that final push for the playoffs or start to fade way as the hot summer days turn to cool autumn nights.  We will start off in Region 6AAA where the Sonoraville Phoenix hosted the Ringgold Tigers in an important region game for both teams.  The teams played to a 7-7 tie in the first half and then Ringgold pulled away in the 2nd half to win 28-7.  The Phoenix turned the ball over 4 times including 3 interceptions in the 2nd half that contributed to Ringgold scoring points.  For the Phoenix to get into the playoffs, they will probably need to win out and their schedule does not get any easier.  They go on the road to play surprising Haralson County and their hoss RB Treylon Shepperd Friday night.  Calhoun was off but still hold onto first place in the region. Their road trip continues Friday night as the play the rival Adairsville Tigers.  Adairsville is coming off a huge region win by knocking off the upstart LFO Warriors in LFO Friday night, 13-12.  The Tigers Playoff hopes stay very much alive.  Calhoun is still king of the region and I don't see them giving up the region this year.  North Murray will be your 2nd place team.  I think Haralson is number 3 and the last spot in the region for playoffs could be between Adairsville and LFO.

In Region 7AA, Rockmart showed its supremacy by annihilating Chattooga Friday night 56-0.  They will win the region outright and may have something to say about the state title come December.  The Gordon Central Warriors lost another heartbreaker at home, 13-12 in region play to Dade County Friday night.  Missed extra points was the difference again in a must win for the Warriors to get a playoff spot.  Coosa got its first win of the year by defeating Armuchee 51-29.  The game was close untill the 2nd half when the Eagles broke it wide open.  Peperell showed its might over Model beating them 41-7.  Region 7AA Matchups for Friday include:

Other observations from Friday night include Rome continuing to roll, Cartersville wins, Christian Heritage suffered its first loss of the season against Darlington, and Lafayette almost came back and defeated Heritage.  Looking forward to some more great football this Friday night!
