Week 6 Highlights of High School Football Across NWGA

6 weeks of High School Football in the books across NWGA and of course you have the usual suspects leading their respected regions and also a few surprises this year of much improved teams!  The Calhoun Yellow Jackets continue to roll this season as they defeated Ringgold on the road Friday night 42-7.  Zach Fuller had the best performance of the night as he rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns.  The Jackets will be off this week as they concentrate on Adairsville for next week.  The Sonoraville Phoenix Offense came alive this past Friday night in Chatsworth as the Phoenix punished the Murray Indians 61-18.  Cole Godfrey and Ben Burns accounted for over 400 yards of offense for the Phoenix.  Sonoraville returns home to host Ringgold this Friday night.  The GC Warriors ran into a buzzsaw at Chattooga Friday night as they had no answer to the rushing attack of the Indians.    Chattogga won 34-7 and head into a showdown for the defacto region title against  Rockmart Friday night.  Gordon Central gets ready for Homecoming Friday night as they host Dade County.

OBSERVATIONS AND SURPRISES IN OUR AREA

As no surprise, Calhoun continues to dominate everybody in Region 6AAA and should be claiming their 18th straight region title come early November.  Rockmart continues to reign supreme in 7AA and could be in the discussion of state title in the next few months.  Rome and Cartersville are still winning and leading their regions.  I think the three big surprises in our area have to be Christian Heritage, Lafayette, and Haralson County.  Christian Heritage is 4-0 for the first time ever and ride on the success of their quarterback Matthew Neff.  Lafayette is 4-1 on the season and should be undefeated as they squandered a 26 point lead to Christian Heritage a few weeks ago.  LaFayette could make a playoff run with favorable games remaining in their region schedule.  Haraslon County is a big surprise as well with the running power of Treylon Shepperd as they are 3-1 on the season.  Coosa is a stunning 0-5 so far.  I picked them to finish in the top 4 of Region7AA and injuries have plagued the Eagles.  Chattooga is ahead of schedule with the running tandem of EJ Lackey and Leshaun Lester,  Pepperell continues to win and Model is 2-0 in region play.  GC still has a chance to run the table and sneak into the playoffs.

I think North Murray is your #2 team in 6AAA.  The last 2 playoff spots could be  a toss up between Haralson County, Adairsville, Sonoraville and a much improved LFO team who is 4-1 already.  We are halfway through the season folks and expect to seem some more intriguing football in our area!

Week 5 Highlights of High School Football across NW GA

Week 5 is in the books in High School Football across NWGA and talk about some great football in our area!  3 games standout from this past Friday night and I will start out in Murray County.  The #1 ranked Calhoun Yellow Jackets in AAA headed to play North Murray Friday night and the Mountaineers gave the Jackets all they could for one half of football.  The Yellow Jackets trailed 10-0 at halftime as they could not get anything going at all on the offense.  Of course Hal Lamb is known for his 2nd half adjustments and as scripted, the Jackets stormed back in the 2nd half.  Gavin Gray lead the comeback with over 280 yards passing and 3 touchdown passes as the Jackets defeated North Murray 34-10.  Calhoun improves to 4-0 on the season and travel to Ringgold Friday night.  North Murray falls 2-2 and has an interesting matchup at Adairsville Friday.  Region play began in 7AA and the Coosa Eagles and Chattooga Indians battled each other Friday night in an epic showdown.  Chattooga was able to hold off the Eagles 34-32 behind almost 400 yards rushing on the night.  Indians runningback Lashaun Lester had 287 of those yards on 27 carries and 3 touchdowns.  The Indians picked up their first region win in Coosa Friday night and head back home for a showdown with the Gordon Central Warriors this Friday night.

Maybe the best game of the night was at Ratner Stadium where the Gordon Central Warriors hosted the Pepperell Dragions in a region match up.  Both teams went back in forth in this amazing game.  GC jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter off a fumble and a missed FG.  Nelson Gravitt scored the Warriors first TD's on runs.  Pepperell would battle back to trail 14-13 at halftime.  After trailing 21-14 with 5 minutes remaining in the game, the Warriors rturned a fumble 67 yards from Seth Wolfe to the endzone to tie the game at 21.  GC would pick off a Pepperell pass on the next possession  and take lead 27-21 on a pick six.  The xtrapoint attempt was botched by the Warriors.  Pepperell was able to win the game with a last minute drive that culminated with a Payton Rhoades TD catch and an extra point from Ramiro Alanis to clinch the game.  An outstand ing game by both teams and for GC to hang in the game with a perennial team like Pepperell shows how far this Warrior team has come along in the last year or so.  Gordon Central was outscored the previous two meetings with Pepperell 112-0.

Other games of note include Haralson County proving there are  no fluke in the region by defeating the Adairsville Tigers 51-28.  Another amazing display of offense from Rebels RB Treylon Shepperd has he rushed for almost 300 yards against the Tigers.  They are 3-0 for the first time since 2007.  Coahulla Creek snapped the longest losing streak in the state of Georgia at 27 games by defeating the Murray County Indians 35-7.  LFO gets a big time win against Ringgold 35-25 to improve to 3-1 on the season.  Christian Heritage is 4-0 after upsetting #8 Mt.Zion in SingleA Private  30-22.  Rome extends its winning streak to 31 games by defeating Carrolton 65-51. Cartersville, Rockmart, Darlington, and Model won as well in our area.  Looking forward to some more great High School Football in our area this Friday Night!

Week 4 Highlights From High School Football In NW GA

This past Friday night was the fourth week of High School Football action across the area and some exceptional football was played!  Cross town rivals Calhoun and Sonoraville played each other Friday night at the Reeve with a delayed start because of unexpected thunderstorm right before kickoff.  The delay did not stop the explosive Calhoun Yellow Jacket offense from jumping out of the gate and scoring 31 points by halftime.  Zack Fuller rushed for 100yards and scored 3 touchdowns in the Yellow Jackets 38-0 win over the Phoenix.  Calhoun is 11-0 all time over Sonoraville in the series.  The yellow Jackets travel to Chatsworth Friday night to play North Murray in  a Region6AAA matchup.  The Phoenix will be off this week.  The Rome Wolves extended their win streak to 30 games by defeating Kell, 35-6.  Pepperell got their first win of the season beating Heritage 31-17.  Adairsville soundly defeated Coahulla Creek 41-10. Preston Poag and North Murray upset Ringgold 14-7 Friday night.  Rockmart goes to 3-0 on the season by defeating Heard County 33-0.  Christian Heritage came back from 26 points in the 2nd half to beat LaFayette 35-26 to go 3-0 for the first time in school History! LaFayette was looking to go 4-0 for the first time since 1991.  They drop to 3-1 and will be off this week.

Region7AA Play Begins And Key Games

Region play begins Friday and the next seven games become very important for everybody in the region! Gordon Central opens up Friday night at home against Pepperell.  Both teams come in at 1-2 and want to start region play with a win! Pepperell was #2 in the region last year and is looking to improve.  GC is coming trying to improve from 2 region wins from last year and be in the discussion for a playoff spot come first week in November. The other games in  our region will be Armuchee visiting Rockmart and Dade County traveling to play Model.  The game of the night should be Chattooga @Coosa.  Chattooga comes in at 2-1 with a high powered offense including runningback EJ Lackey.  Coosa is 0-3 with a  brutal non region schedule and their looking to make a statement game as they are favored to make a run in the region.

There are key games in Region 6AAA to watch Friday night. Ringgold hosts LFO in a game that could determine playoff spots later in the season.  LFO was 5-5 last year and looks to improve that record this season.  Ringgold has a had a few off years and looks to rebound after a tough loss from North Murray last week.  Haralson County hosts Adairsville Friday night in an intersting matchup.  Haraslon County is 2-0 and if they defeat Adairsville in region play, are they a legit playoff team?  Murray County hosts Coahulla Creek Friday night as both teams are 0-3 on the seson. Coahulla Creek could stop the state of Georgia's longest losing streak with a win Friday night. They lost a hertbreaker two weeks ago to SE Whitfield 9-6.  Should be another great week of High School Football in our region!!

Week 3 Highlights From Our Area

Another great night of High School Football across NW Georgia this past Friday night and here are some of the highlights.

Calhoun vs. Therell  Calhoun was impressive on all sides of the ball as they dominated Therell 52-6 in their home opener of the season. Most of the starters were pulled in the first half because of the lopsided score. Zack Fuller had 60 yards rushing and a touchdown in limited action. Calhoun opens region play at home against Sonoraville Friday night.

Gordon Central vs. Gilmer  Gordon Central got a much needed win on the road Friday night as they defeated the Gilmer Bobcats 44-15.  Nelson Gravitt was the MVP on Offense as he ran in for 3 Warrior touchdowns.  The GC Defense was impressive as well creating four turnovers. This win will hopefully boost their confidence as they enjoy their off week and get ready for region play next week at home against Pepperell.

Darlington vs. Sonoraville  The Phoenix could not get anything going on offense Friday night and they were shut out by the Tigers.  The first half was a defensive stalemate as both teams were tied at 0 at halftime.  The Tigers came alive in the 2nd half with runningback Kolin Rogers scoring all three touchdowns for Darlington in route to victory and a 3-0 record! It doesn't get any easier for the Phoenix as they open up region play with Calhoun Friday night.

Other Games and Notes of Interest  LaFayette is 3-0 for the first time since 2009  after beating Gordon Lee 35-0 Friday night. They will play Heritage Friday night.  Chattooga defeated Heirtage Friday night 34-7 with a big night from QB Clayton Johnson who threw for 3 touchdowns.  Preston Poag was to much for Model to handle as the North Murray Mountainers beat Model 44-7.  Armuchee was defeated by the big O-line of Haralson County and RB Treylon Shepperd 35-0. Dade County was defeated by Trion 21-0.  This is the last week before region play begins next Friday! Some teams are off this week while others continue with non region competition. I went 15-3 in my Picks for last week as I improve to 31-11 on the season.
