Week 2 Highlights Of High School Football

Week 2 of High School Football across NW Georgia had some great highlights and a few surprises.  Sonoraville picked up their first win of the season with a 21-14 victory over the Model Blue Devils Friday night at the Firepit.  Chase Collins, QB for the Phoenix had 3 touchdowns on the night.  The Phoenix stopped the Model comeback in the fourth quarter with a pivotal sack on fourth down to clinch the game.  Sonoraville travels to play ranked Darlington Friday night in a tough matchup.  Gordon Central continued to struggle Friday night as they were shut out by Christian Heritage, 35-0 at Ratner Stadium.  The defense had no solution for CH quarterback Matthew Neff and his high powered arm.  He tossed 5 touchdown passes in a winning effort.  The GC offense could not find any spark at all.  GC travels to play Gilmer County Friday not and hopes to win their first game of the season.  Cass defeated Adairsville Friday night in a battle between rivals in Bartow County.  Darlington's defense stifled the high powered offense of Coosa, 21-6.  Chattooga upset Weselyan out of Atlanta, 17-0.  EJ Lackey had a great night running the ball for the Indians.  Rockmart had a huge win on the road against Central carrolton, 51-7.  Can you believe LaFayette is 2-0 on the season? They defeated Fannin County Friday night 28-20.  Region 7AA was 2-4 in games played Friday night.  One more week of non region games and then the region schedule gets started next week!

Week number two for the High School Football season in NW GA includes several great matchups from teams in our area.  Gordon Central has their first home game of the season as they will host Christian Heritage Friday night at Ratner Stadium. Week One Highlights and Observations

What a great first week of high school football across NW georgia starting last Thursday night with the opening games of the Corky Kell Classic In Rome! Calhoun versus Ridgeland was the opening game.  The game was tied at 14 with both teams fighting for advantage and the Yellow Jackets turning the ball over a few times.  It was all a distant memory in the 2nd half as the Jackets scored 31 straight points to win 45-21.  Gavin Gray had over 300 yards passing for the Jackets.  Calhoun will be off this week as they prepare for visiting Therrell next week at the Reeve.  Gordon Central unfortunately did not get off to the start they wanted this season.  The Warriors ran into a buzzsaw named Treylon Sheppard for the Haralson County Rebels.  Sheppard had over a 100 yds and several touchdowns as the Rebels downed the Warriors 35-7.  Sonoraville was idle and they get ready for a big match up with the Model Blue Devils this Friday at the Firepit in Sonoraville.  Model lost a heartbreaker to Lafayette Friday night 28-25.  Rockmart beat county rival Cedartown 20-14.  Other teams in Region 7AA competed as well Friday with Pepperell being dominated by Darlington 44-14, Trion edging out Coosa 18-15, Gordon Lee beating Dade County 21-13, and Adairsville beating Chattooga in the last few moments, 21-20!  Possibly one of the biggest surprises of the night in our area was Armuchee defeating Murray County, 28-7! Rome defeated Marietta Thursday night and Cartersville easily defeated Allatoona Friday night 35-0.  Great games and quite a few surprises for the first week. I went 9-3 for the picks for last week.  Look for the 2nd week to be just as compelling!  I will list the matchups and preview Friday nights games Wednesday.

Scrimmage Highlights and Region Picks

Gordon Central, Calhoun, and Sonoraville participated in scrimmage games last week as they prepared to begin the regular season of high school football.  Calhoun hosted NW Whitfield this past Thursday evening at the Reeve, and they showed why they were the AAA state champs last year!  Calhoun got on the board first with a 84 yd td interception from Collin Baggett.  Calhoun quarterback Gavin Gray connected with Luke Moseley for a td.  The starters were benched before halftime giving 2nd and 3rd string time to play.  More touchdowns were scored by Yellow Jacket players Grant Gilmer, Jerrian Hames, Owen Goble, Christian Lewis, and Cole Speer.  The Jackets won 48-7 and they start the regular season Thursday evening in Rome against Ridgeland which is part of the Corky Kell Classic.  Sonoraville and Gordon Central played each other Friday night at Ratner Memorial stadium in a tune up to get ready for the regular season.  A huge crowd showed up for both sides and Gordon Central looked dominant throughout the matchup.  GC started the scoring with a 32yd FG from David Bautista in the 2nd quarter.  Dawson Lackey from GC intercepted a Sonoraville pass for a Td and GC lead 9-0 at halftime.  in the 3rd quarter, both teams sat their starters and emptied the benches.  Darren Coleman recovered a fumble from Sonoraville and John Rainwater later scored another GC touchdown making the lead 15-0.  Sonoraville scored a  touchdown later in the third with a 2yd TD run by Jason Galmon to make it 15-7 GC.  Central added two more touchdowns from Bryson McGinnis to make the final score 28-7 Gordon central over Sonoraville.  Gordon Central begins the regular season Friday night on the road against Haralson County.  Sonoraville has an off week as they begin the regular season next Friday at home against Model.

Region Picks for 7AA and 6AAA

It is going to be an exciting year in both regions and here are my picks to earn playoff spots from each region.

Region7AA

Rockmart will win the region again with returing players Juke Booze (WR) and Reed Couch (TE) and two all star RB's.  Coosa will take the 2nd spot with many returning starters from last year including Senior QB Logan Pledger, RB Jalen Hodge, and WR/TE Sean Brown.  Pepperell is my pick to take the 3rd spot.  They lost several key players to graduation last year but the talent is there with Gage Moses, Payton Rhoades, and Cam Miles.  Gordon Central is my pick to get that last Playoff spot in the region.  If the Warriors can stay healthy, they might be the surprise team of the region this year!  They return all region players Dawson Lackey, Abraham Reyes, and Luis Castillo.  Cameron Pierce, Neslon Gravitt, and Brady Lackey looked very impressive in the scrimmage game against Sonoraville last week.  This is going to be a very competitive year in Region 7AA.

Region6AAA

Calhoun will easily win the region and bank on Hal Lamb getting his 18th straight region title and breaking the state record that is tied with Lincoln County.  A host of starters return from last years AAA state title team including QB Gavin Gray and defensive star Davis Allen.  With Bremen going back down to AA, spots 2-4 could be wide open in 6AAA.  I look for North Murray to pick up the 2nd spot as they have had back to back playoff appearances and their all star QB is back for his senior year.  Adairsville will return for the playoffs with a load of talent from last years playoff team.  I think Sonoraville can bounce back from last years rare down appearance.  I look for LFO and Ringgold to make it interesting for those final spots.

High School football starts next week!

The high school football season starts next week in NW Georgia and we can hardly contain ourselves right now!  So much to talk about!  Will Calhoun repeat as state champs in AAA and will Coach Lamb break the GA high school record of 17 straight region titles?  How will Coach Nix do in his 2nd year at the helm of the Gordon Central Warriors?  Will the Sonoraville Phoenix bounce back after a down year last year?  Can the Adairsville Tigers build on their playoff appearance from last year?  Can the Rome Wolves go for the 3peat for AAAAA state titles?  These questions and more can hopefully be answered in the next several months as we get ready for another exciting year of high school football in our region.  Scrimmage games start this week as maybe we get a sneak preview of what to expect from some teams in our area. Here is a list of games in our region:
